NSW (ESS) Energy Saving Scheme Information
Read below to find out more about the government incentive schemes that are currently available in NSW.
What is the Energy Savings Scheme (ESS)?
The ESS is a NSW government scheme designed to reduce electricity and/or gas use by creating financial incentives for households and organisations to invest in upgrades to save energy.
Home Energy Efficiency Retrofit (HEER) activities can be delivered under the ESS by Accredited Certificate Providers (ACPs) to help NSW households and small businesses save energy by supporting a range of energy efficiency upgrades, including lighting, draught proofing and equipment upgrades.
ESS Benefits for Households
If you are keen to participate in the EES, we can help you with a range of energy-saving measures including:
- Upgrades to energy-efficient appliances, such as a solar or heat pump hot water system, or modern air conditioning,
- Installing LED lighting; and
- Installing solar systems
Through these upgrades, you’ll not only reduce your energy consumption (significantly) but also lower your utility bills, also significantly.
You’ll also find that improving insulation, and swapping out old lighting to energy-efficient LEDs will improve the comfort levels of your home i.e. it will be warmer in winter and cooler in summer. And – you’ll be contributing to reducing Australia’s carbon footprint! That’s a win for everyone, and the environment!
Efficient Energy Group is here to help you do this.
ESS Benefits for Small Businesses
The ESS offers many great benefits for businesses. Most importantly, these rebates can substantially reduce your operational costs.
Upgrading inefficient equipment you’re still using, with new energy-efficient alternatives will
- Lower your energy use and your utility expenses,
- Reduce your carbon footprint; and
- Demonstrate your commitment to sustainability, and corporate responsibility. Today’s consumers are increasingly factoring these considerations into their final purchasing decision.
Common upgrade considerations for businesses include:
- Upgrading your HVAC systems (air conditioning, hot water etc),
- Retrofitting your buildings and workspaces with better insulation and LED lighting. We provide specialist office/retail, warehouse, and car park lighting upgrades
- Installing solar systems; and
- Using energy-efficient industrial equipment
We offer a complete range of services to help you select and install energy efficient appliances and equipment, and navigate the ESS rebate system.
How do I get involved?
Your participation is voluntary. If you would like to participate, you will need to work with an ACP to arrange an upgrade at your property. The ACP or its representatives may ask you to enter into a contract for the upgrade works. You should carefully consider any such agreement in the same way you would consider any other contract for work being conducted at your property.
The Peak Demand Reduction Scheme aims to reduce peak electricity demand in NSW.
NSW is implementing a scheme that incentivises households and businesses to shift their energy consumption away from peak hours. Through this program, the risk of power outages will drop drastically with estimated savings on bills surpassing $1 billion over 18 years. Furthermore, it provides us the opportunity to make use of renewable energies more efficiently in order to create long-term net zero emissions by 2050!

The Peak Demand Reduction Scheme (PDRS) encourages the implementation of initiatives like:
- Installing smart meters,
- Encouraging the use of battery storage systems with solar systems, and
- Implementing various other load-shifting strategies.
The aim of these strategies is to help manage and distribute your energy use more evenly throughout the day to help reduce peak hour demand.
Long-term, this scheme will have enormous benefits for the NSW energy grid. It will improve its stability and reliability by distributing demand more evenly across the day. The uptake of more energy efficient measures and usage will help lower greenhouse gases and support our transition to a low-carbon economy.
