Your Questions About The NSW Air Conditioning Rebate Answered
Have a question about the NSW Air Conditioning Rebate? In this article, we explain what the rebate is, and answer some of the most common questions about it… Who is eligible, how to apply, what is a reputable brand of air conditioner, and what the Emerald Airlink is.
Who Is Eligible For The Air conditioning Rebate In NSW?
The air conditioning rebate in NSW is available to homeowners and small businesses located in NSW. However, not all homeowners and small businesses will be eligible for the rebate for various reasons. To help you work out if you are, we’ve set out the eligibility criteria for you.
Note: the NSW State Government’s Energy Savings Scheme Rule (ESS Rule) decides these criteria.
- Your house or business premises must be located in New South Wales.
- You must own the house or business premises where the air conditioner will be installed OR have the consent of your landlord to have it installed.
- You must consent to having data relevant to the installation collected.
- You must use an approved HEER (Home Energy Efficiency Retrofit) installer to remove existing equipment AND install your new air conditioner.
- You must have a contract in place with an Accredited Certificate Provider (ACP) before the air conditioner is installed.
- You must choose an air conditioner from the GEMS (Greenhouse and Energy Minimum Standards) Register of eligible air conditioners as defined by the GEMS Determination 2019.
- Your new air conditioner must have its specifications recorded in the GEMS Register, and meet or exceed specific energy efficiency standards and performance benchmarks. Buying a GEMS Register listed air conditioner through an ACP ensures this is the case.
What Is The Air conditioning Rebate In NSW?
The air conditioning rebate in NSW is a State Government initiative designed to encourage home and small business owners to install or upgrade to energy efficient air conditioning. Currently the rebate contributes up to $1,000 towards the cost of your new air conditioner. The final amount will depend on your circumstances and installation.
Point to note: there is a minimum payment required towards the cost of the air conditioner and its installation. How much this payment is will depend on the air conditioner’s size, the scope of the on-site work required, travel and transport costs involved in the installation, and so on.
How Does It Work?
When you contact us to arrange a quote, we automatically deduct the rebate from the total amount of your quote. That way, there’s no guesswork as to how much it will be, and what your contribution is.
How Can One Apply For The Government Aircon Rebate?
To apply for the NSW Government Air-con Rebate you:
- Contact accredited certificate suppliers (ACPs) in your area to a) ascertain your eligibility and b) obtain quotes,
- Choose your approved air conditioner with the help of the ACP so they can factor it into their quote,
- Appoint your ACP BEFORE any work starts on your installation,
- Sign the rebate nomination form PRIOR to the installation being completed because the rebate does not apply to any previously completed work or installations.
Here are those steps in more detail:
- Find and contact ACPs i.e. approved suppliers, in your local area. They will check whether you qualify for the government aircon rebate and give you a quote. Get more than one quote so you get the best deal and air conditioner for your home or business.
- Select a GEMS Register approved air conditioner that best suits your requirements. The supplier will help with this, and build their quote accordingly.
- Choose and appoint your ACP BEFORE work commences on your aircon installation.
- Sign your rebate nomination form BEFORE the installation has been finished because already completed installations are not eligible for the rebate.
Note: steps 3 and 4 are important because completing them correctly will ensure you get the rebate.
In addition to these steps, ensure your ACP sends a licensed air conditioning and refrigeration contractor to do your installation. Make sure the contractor also shows you how to use it correctly.
If you’ve had an old air conditioner replaced through the rebate, the ACP or contractor is also responsible for removing and disposing of/recycling it.
What Size Room Can A 7kw Air Conditioner Effectively Cool?
A 7kW air conditioner can effectively cool a 45m2 – 65m2 room. If your room is smaller, or larger, than this, you’ll need a smaller, or larger, air conditioner for reasons we’ll explain later.
Air conditioners are measured by their hourly capacity to remove heat from a space as calculated in watts, or kilowatts. A 7kW air conditioner therefore can remove 7 kilowatts i.e. 7,000 watts, of heat from a room this size in one hour. However, although a 7kW air conditioner certainly has the capacity to effectively cool a room of this size, there are a number of other factors besides room size to factor into the equation…
Is the room insulated?
Insulation (including window finishes, blinds, curtains etc) makes a huge difference to the effectiveness of any cooling, and heating, system. For example, a 45m2 room with poor insulation will require more cooling capacity than a 65m2 room with good insulation.
Does the room have north and/or west facing windows and external walls?
North and west facing windows, and external walls, cop the full brunt of our summer sun unless shaded by trees, or protected by adequate insulation and window protection. Thus, a small room with unprotected north or west facing windows and external walls will require more energy to cool than a larger internal room or a room on the south or eastern side of the building.
Where is the building located?
An air conditioner located in a warm, humid area of NSW will not be as effective as the same air conditioner installed in the same sized room in a cooler milder area.
Is the room closed off or part of a larger open space?
When determining whether a 7kW air conditioner is the right size for your installation, you’ll need to factor in the space’s layout. Open plan spaces typically require more cooling capacity than closed spaces but an open space is easier to cool than multiple rooms and partitions.
Why can’t I just use a 7kW air conditioner in any size room?
You may be tempted to install the largest possible air conditioner because it will ‘cool the place down faster’. However, if your air conditioner is too big for the room, it will certainly cool it down very quickly BUT – it will also start doing something we call ‘short cycling’.
‘Short cycling’ means the air conditioner is switching itself on and off (cycling) more frequently to maintain the desired temperature. This puts strain on the compressor and other components, and causes premature wear and tear. Air conditioners also use more power when they switch on so the more often it has to do this, the more power it will use, and the higher your energy bill will be!
Installing a smaller than desirable air conditioner for the space isn’t ideal either as it will need to work overtime to cool the room down, and keep it at the desired temperature. In fact, if it’s too small it may not reach the set temperature at all, and will essentially run continuously instead of switching on and off as it should. Once again, this places strain on the unit and causes excessive wear and tear. It will also use more power, and run up your power bill.
